How do you get there from Hayling Island?

Drive north over Hayling Bridge towards Havant, then follow signs for the A3(M) / A3 towards Petersfield. Queen Elizabeth Country Park sits beside the A3 at Buriton (postcode area PO8 for the forest side). Brown tourism signs help on the final approach.

Allow roughly 30–40 minutes each way depending on traffic. Do not treat that as a guarantee on bank holidays or summer Fridays.

By public transport the usual pattern is train or bus to Havant or Petersfield, then a Stagecoach bus towards the park. What is Queen Elizabeth Country Park?

Queen Elizabeth Country Park is a large Hampshire County Council country park of downland and woodland inside the South Downs National Park. It includes Butser Hill, the highest point on the South Downs, with open chalk grassland and wide views on a clear day. There are woodland trails, visitor facilities, and play areas on the forest side. Admission to the park itself is free; parking is charged.

Charges and opening notes change — check the official parking page before you set off rather than relying on an old figure from a guide like this one.

What can you do on a day trip?

• Butser Hill: short climbs and longer loops on chalk grassland, with views over Hampshire and towards the Channel when the weather is clear. Wear proper footwear — the ascent is noticeable even on shorter routes.
• Forest trails: beech woodland paths on the park's forest side, useful when the wind on the open hill is strong.
• South Downs Way: the national trail passes through the park; you can walk a section without attempting a full stage.
• Visitor centre area: toilets, kiosk/café facilities and information when open — hours are seasonal, so check before relying on them.
• Butser Ancient Farm (nearby): an experimental archaeology open-air museum a short distance from the park, with its own opening days and tickets. Confirm current hours on butserancientfarm.co.uk rather than assuming it is open every day.

Dogs are commonly walked in the park; keep them under control, especially near livestock, play areas and busy paths. Rules and seasonal notes can change — follow on-site signs.

Are there other South Downs options from Hayling?

Yes. Is this a good rainy-day plan?

Mixed weather still works if you have waterproofs and accept that hill views may disappear. Heavy rain is better spent at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or in Chichester (cathedral, Novium) — both covered elsewhere on the site. The house also has room to spread out afterwards.
