Portsmouth makes a straightforward day away from Hayling Island when you want ships, museums or a city waterfront. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Gunwharf and Southsea are about 20 minutes west by car in normal traffic via the A3023, but allow longer at peak times and in summer.

Why use Sandy Point as a base for Portsmouth?

A Portsmouth day can be as full as you want it to be, while the house gives the whole group space before and afterwards. Wittering Sands is exclusive-use, with four bedrooms, five beds and 3.5 bathrooms, sleeping up to nine. There is a kitchen for self-catering and off-road parking for four cars.

How do you drive from Hayling Island to Portsmouth?

Drive north over Hayling Bridge, then follow signs towards Portsmouth and the Historic Dockyard. The Dockyard entrance is at Victory Gate on Queen Street; brown tourism signs help on the final approach.

Parking arrangements and ticket options can change, so check the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard website before setting off. Do not rely on an old car-park price or assume that every attraction uses the same ticket.

Can you take the Hayling Ferry and bus?

Yes. The Hayling Ferry runs year-round across Langstone Harbour between Ferry Point on Hayling Island and Eastney Point on Portsea Island. Bicycles are carried free. On the Eastney side, the number 25 Southsea Skipper links the ferry with Southsea, Old Portsmouth and The Hard by Gunwharf. Check the current bus timetable as well as the ferry crossing before committing to the connection.

Ferry Point is at the western tip of Hayling Island. It is not a walk from Wittering Road: from Sandy Point, plan a short drive or a bike or bus connection across the island first.

Is the train useful?

For the house, the usual rail route is to Havant, then bus or taxi onto Hayling Island. For a Portsmouth day, trains serve Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth & Southsea, which can help if part of the group wants to go cityward without taking the car.

What can you do at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard?

The public attractions include HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum. Ticket combinations and access can change, and the Mary Rose may need a separate ticket depending on what you buy, so compare the current options on the official attraction websites.

When it is running, the seasonal waterbus connects the main Dockyard with the Gosport-side naval attractions. It is included with eligible Dockyard tickets, but schedules and operating days vary through the year — check first rather than building the day around an assumed crossing.
