October half-term on Hayling Island: a family week at Sandy Point

Hampshire's autumn half-term falls in late October, when the island is quieter, the harbour is still, and the beach belongs to whoever turns up. A week at Wittering Sands, our exclusive-use house at Sandy Point, suits that kind of break: beach and harbour from the door, four bedrooms sleeping up to nine, and a kitchen big enough to cook properly after a day out.

When is October half-term in Hampshire?

For Hampshire local-authority maintained schools in 2026, the autumn half-term week is Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October, with pupils usually breaking up on Friday 23 October and returning on Monday 2 November. Academies and independent schools set their own dates, so check your own school calendar before you plan.

Why does Sandy Point work for a half-term week?

Sandy Point sits at the eastern tip of Hayling Island, where Chichester Harbour meets the Solent. The shoreline and the lagoon are a few minutes on foot, so a day can be built from short walks rather than long drives, which matters when the group spans grandparents to a seven year old.

Because the house is let on an exclusive-use, whole-house basis, a mixed-age family is not split across separate rooms or separate bookings. Four bedrooms and five beds sleep up to nine, three bedrooms are ensuite, and self-catering means wet-weather suppers and slow breakfasts are easy. Dogs are welcome too, kept off the beds and sofas, with a boot brush by the back door.

What is there to do with mixed ages?

• Sandy Point shoreline: the quiet end of the island, good for walks, skimming stones and watching the harbour traffic. Do watch the current at the harbour entrance, and treat it as a walking beach rather than a swimming beach for small children.
• Eastoke Corner and Beachlands: the proper bucket-and-spade seafront, with the funfair and the Hayling Light Railway. Both are seasonal, so check before you go.
• The lagoon walk: a short loop from the door past the RNLI station to Black Point, flat enough for buggies and small legs.
• Hayling Billy Coastal Path: the old railway line along the western shore, a longer flat walk or ride with harbour views the whole way.

What if it rains?

Honest answer: October on the south coast is often mixed, so plan for at least one wet afternoon. The house works well for that, with space to spread out and games in the cupboard by the stairs.

Further afield, the Station Theatre in Hayling often has something on, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the Mary Rose fill a full day, and Chichester has the cathedral and the Novium museum. All are seasonal in their own ways, so check opening times before you set off.

Can you sail at half-term?

Hayling Island Sailing Club is a few minutes on foot from the house, and autumn still has club activity on the harbour. Visiting sailors should check hisc.co.uk for what is on. The house is a walking-distance base rather than the organiser, but for a sailing family it is a very convenient one.

Are dogs welcome?

Yes. Dogs stay on an exclusive-use booking, off the beds and sofas, with the boot brush by the back door.
